The twin towers of Piombino

An extraordinary event marked the change in the skyline of the southern Tuscan coast. Indeed, at 10:09 AM on October 29, 2024, the two twin towers of the former Enel Tor del Sale power plant in Piombino, standing 195 meters tall, collapsed in a cloud of debris and dust, thanks to controlled explosions of microcharges placed at their base and in two intermediate points.

The decommissioning of the ENEL plant took place in several phases; after the initial step in 2015, it culminated with the definitive closure in 2021. The demolition of the chimneys, erected in 1977, represents a crucial milestone in the process of reclaiming an area of 120 hectares, which is set to become a tourist and hospitality hub. The prime location overlooking the sea and the commitment to expanding green spaces promise to dramatically transform the local landscape.

Representatives from local and regional authorities were present at the event, along with members of Enel and Tor del Sale S.p.A., the company that acquired the area and will be responsible for its tourist development. With this demolition, the Region is preparing to write a new chapter in its history, focusing on sustainable development and enhancement of the territory.
